Shane McDonald (1960-2024)

Shane McDonald was an Australian filmmaker, cameraman, producer and co-founder of Crewhouse Media whose career spanned more than four decades and took him to some of the world's most challenging environments.
Shane began his television career in regional Australia before moving to Europe in the late 1980s. Cyprus soon became his home and the base from which he built an extraordinary international career. Over more than forty years, he worked in over seventy countries across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, covering conflicts, humanitarian crises, political change and major world events. His work brought him into collaboration with leading international broadcasters and organisations, including the BBC, the European Broadcasting Union and numerous global television networks, earning him a reputation as a cameraman who could always be relied upon in the most demanding circumstances.
In 2006, Shane co-founded Crewhouse Media, helping to build it into one of Cyprus' leading independent production companies. His experience, editorial judgement and uncompromising production standards became part of the company's DNA. Under his guidance, Crewhouse developed an international reputation for delivering high-quality documentaries, factual programming and production services for broadcasters, international organisations and NGOs.
Yet Shane's greatest legacy extends far beyond the productions he created.
Beyond filmmaking, Shane had an extraordinary gift for bringing people together. After hours, Crewhouse often became an informal salon where journalists, politicians, military officers, United Nations staff, academics, artists and filmmakers would gather over a drink to discuss Cyprus, international affairs, cinema, and the ideas shaping the world. These evenings reflected Shane's boundless curiosity and his belief that the best conversations happened when people from different
backgrounds met as equals. During the summer months, he would transform the Crewhouse garden into an open-air cinema, projecting films onto the exterior wall while friends, colleagues and neighbours gathered under the night sky with a beer in hand. And, most time, it would be accompanied by a huge bonfire, simply because he liked burning stuff.
He possessed a rare combination of creativity, resilience and generosity. He was fiercely loyal, endlessly resourceful, wonderfully stubborn when he believed in something, and never lost his unmistakable sense of humour, even in the most difficult situations.
Together with his partners, he built a creative community founded on trust, collaboration, integrity and a shared passion for storytelling. He mentored filmmakers, supported journalists, encouraged emerging talent and inspired those around him through both his work and his character. Shane was a person that one could rely on.
Shane passed away in 2024, leaving behind his beloved wife Jill, his children Olivia and Lex, and countless friends and colleagues across the world. He also leaves behind an extraordinary body of work that documented history as it unfolded, and a legacy measured not only in the films he helped create, but in the lives he touched with his kindness, generosity and unwavering belief in the power of storytelling.
At Crewhouse, Shane's influence remains woven into everything we do. His professionalism set our standards. His creativity shaped our work. His friendship defined our culture. He will always be remembered not only as a founding partner, but as an exceptional filmmaker, a trusted colleague and a deeply cherished friend.
